Las Gordas
LAS GORDAS
When Ana, Cata, Sandra, and Isa met in a literature class at Pontificia Bolivariana University over twenty years ago, they had no idea they were forming more than a study group—they were creating a sisterhood that would survive everything life could throw at them. These four paisa women from Medellín have been through it all together: bad boyfriends, worse haircuts, marriages, divorces, remarriage, children, countless diet attempts, and more therapy sessions (both professional and the kind that happens over wine at 2 AM) than they care to count.
Las Gordas—a name they gave themselves with affection and defiance—represents everything these women have become: unapologetically themselves. In a culture that worships youth and beauty, they've chosen to age with humor, grace, and a middle finger to anyone who thinks women in their 40s should fade quietly into the background.
Their debut album "Gorditas de Medellín" is a cumbia-pop love letter to female friendship, capturing the hilarious, heartbreaking, and deeply human experience of navigating life as women who refuse to be invisible. From dealing with critical mothers and unreliable men to confronting aging, failed diets, and the unbreakable bonds of friendship, Las Gordas speak the truth that millions of women live but rarely hear reflected in music.
Isa brings the smoky alto vocals and the wisdom of someone who's been married for 25 years and can tell you exactly where the bodies are buried (metaphorically speaking). Ana, the newlywed of the group, contributes an infectious energy and the kind of optimism that makes the others roll their eyes—lovingly, of course. Cata, the hopeless romantic, lends her voice to every woman still searching for that perfect love story, even after a string of imperfect ones. And Sandra, has the youngest boyfriends of the group, and adds sass, confidence, and a reminder that women can want whatever the hell they want at any age.
Together, they've created something rare: music that makes you laugh until you cry, then cry until you laugh again. "Gorditas de Medellín" is for every woman who's ever been called "señora" too young, been told to smile more, compared herself to her friends, loved her mother while wanting to scream, or found that the truest love story of her life is the one with her best friends.
From Medellín to Florida, from heartbreak to healing, Las Gordas have lived every word they sing. And they're just getting started.
